Smart LED lights are a popular topic in IoT and smart home discussions. The future is certainly bright for both these arenas (pun intended). With technology, the question always seems to turn towards the next best thing. For smart lights, what does that next step look like?
The future of smart lights is uncertain. However, we feel confident that they are here to stay and will only get better. If we follow current trends in smart home technology, we feel comfortable making a few predictions about the next 5-10 years of smart lighting capabilities and benefits.
Check back with us in 2023 and beyond to see how we did!
Truly Intelligent Lights
Lights today can be pretty smart, but they aren’t intelligent just yet. We can envision a future where advanced artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms are able to create truly intelligent lighting systems. Systems that respond to changes in the amount of natural light entering the room and adjust accordingly for example.
Increased Energy Efficiency
It wasn’t too long ago that the industry was skeptical of building a better, more efficient lightbulb. However, smart lights now outperform traditional incandescent bulbs by leaps and bounds. A single incandescent bulb may last for approximately 1,000 - 2,000 hours. By comparison, smart LED lights can beat that by a factor of twenty or more.
As technology continues to advance in this area, bulbs will become more efficient for consumers both in terms of cost as well as use.
Sure, this may sound like wishful thinking, but if current trends in the industry are any indication it’s also extremely likely. Currently, 65% of Americans have purchased LED lights for their homes. Of those, 86% believe that at least one room in their home could benefit from smart lighting.
In addition, major cities such as Chicago are embracing smart technology, including lighting systems. Chicago plans to replace over 270,000 city lights over the next four years and replace them with intelligently controlled LEDs.
Europe is aiming for 300 smart cities by the end of next year. While not all cities will transform into futuristic metropolises overnight, the revolution is certainly underway. As more cities in North America, Europe, and the world over continue the charge, change will also happen on an individual level.
Imagine being able to speak directly to your lights and issue vocal commands. Through intermediaries such as Alexa or Google Home this is already possible. However, imagine a truly intelligent lighting system that responds to your requests without the need for a third party system.
As the technology comes more into focus, voice control will be an essential characteristic of a number of smart home technologies. It is only natural, if not likely that smart lights will lead the way.
Imagine waking up to a gentle bath of warm light. No need for an alarm clock. Groggily, you walk to the kitchen where the smell of freshly brewing coffee is wafting through the air. The lights over your counter hum to life in a warm glow. In the bathroom, your shower turns on and a ray of cool light sprinkles out into the hallway.
It’s not The Jetsons, it’s the reality of what smart home technology can be. Appliances which operate on a schedule with matching light schemes to illuminate your path or activities. From sleeping to coffee to shower. Is it that far off in the future? We don’t think so.
The Future Is Indeed Bright
If the tech revolution of the last decade has shown us anything it’s that technology often moves more quickly than we imagine. Within the next decade, who knows what is possible for smart homes and smart LED lighting solutions. If the current trends are any indication, the future looks pretty bright.
