Home Lighting Tips To Inspire And Awe

Posted by Jack Zhang on

This may surprise you, but not every room in your house is the same. Of course, you already know that much. Your living room serves a different function than your kitchen. Your kitchen is different than your bathroom.

Because each room of the house serves a distinct purpose, there are other differences. A chair for your dining room table will be different than a chair you put in the bathroom. A bedside table? Well, that’s probably different than the coffee table in your living room.

However, when it comes to lights, many take a “one size fits all approach.” Well, we’re here to say it doesn’t have to be that way. Your lights literally set the mood for the entire room. You wouldn’t take a “anything goes” approach with your furnishing and decorations; why should your lights be any different?

Bathroom

The bathroom obviously places an emphasis on personal grooming. Because of this, adequate lighting is essential. However, the bathroom can be tricky for a few reasons. It’s traditionally one of the smaller rooms in the home and there’s often a large mirror to contend with.

The problem with lighting a bathroom is that if you’re not careful, you can cast a shadow on the mirror. When in doubt, use a wall fixture that directs the light up and out rather than an overhead fixture which casts light straight down. When possible? Use both.

Cool, white light works best in a bathroom. It’s the most “true” light which won’t cast unnatural hues on your skin or hair while grooming.

Living Room

The living room is usually the largest room in the home so you’ll want multiple light sources. Wall fixtures which bounce light upward can help “wash” the walls and ceiling in light. This serves to draw attention upward and give the room a larger feel to it.

At the same time, accent lighting can help add depth to corners and provide a layering effect. For living rooms: soft, warm light is best. It creates a cozy and inviting atmosphere. This is ideally suited for rooms where people will congregate for an extended period of leisure time.

Kitchen

The kitchen is an interesting room to consider. On one hand, the kitchen is a place for food preparation and cleanliness. On the other, the kitchen often doubles as a gathering place. For the purposes of practicality, kitchen lighting often includes built-in fixtures or overhead lighting solutions rather than stand-alone fixtures.

Overheard lighting is the most common for kitchens. It’s functional, out of the way, and helps illuminate the space adequately. Cooler hues are typically easier to see by and, as it turns out, that’s pretty important in the kitchen!

Bedroom

The bedroom holds a lot of possibilities for lighting solutions. Most bedrooms will have overhead lighting as well as a few fixtures, typically near the bedside. In general, warm and cozy is the way to go with the bedroom. For normal bedtime activities such as reading, individual fixtures on either side can provide the correct amount of light as needed.
